5G is the 5th generation of cellular technology for the next generation of smartphones after 4G. It has been hyped for over a few years and carriers have begun the process of rolling it out this year. In fact, most recently manufactured phones are 5G enabled. With the rate at which the process is being rolled out, 5G would likely have a foothold in more than a handful of cities this year and then come next year, it could be widespread.
We need to understand that no one can lay claim to 5G invention as it is a contribution from several companies within the mobile ecosystem. 3GPP is the organization that defines the global specifications for 3G UMTS, 4GLTE, and 5G technologies.
Let’s quickly take a run through the previous generations
1G which came in in the 1980s gave us the analog voice. After which we have the 2G around the early 1990s which introduced digital voice as in the CDMA- Code Division Multiple Access. 3G as the third generation in the early 200s brought mobile data and 4GLTE ushered in the era of mobile broadband.
5G which is an improvement on 1G, 2G, 3G, and 4G is meant to provide more connectivity than we have ever experienced before. Being a unified and more capable interface, it has the capacity to enable improved experience, better deployment of models, and also deliver new services. It has a promise of high speed, superior reliability, and negligible latency. With 5G we can be looking at remote healthcare, better and safer transportation, precision agriculture, digitized logistics, and many more.
Let me make it clear that due to the lower power of 5G transmitters, there will be more of them. This implies that it would be required to build a hundred and even thousands of wireless antennas in cities, neighborhoods, and towns with another transmitter placed every two to ten homes.
Now the fear is RFR (Radiofrequency Radiation) which us anything radiated within the electromagnetic spectrum ranging from microwaves, x-rays, radio waves even light from our monitor screen, mobile phone screens, and light from the sun. Though RFR is not inherently dangerous but might be under some circumstances. The only set of RFR that could be dangerous according to scientists is the ones that fall under the ionizing category as non-ionizing radiations are incapable of breaking chemical bonds.
Although, electromagnetic hypersensitivity, is a hypothetical disease in which certain people experience debilitating symptoms in the presence of radiation like cell phones and Wi-Fi. This implies that candidly, there could be a weird feeling. At the same time, research has not been able to link between cell phone radiation and cancers including brain tumors but still, there is what I call consumer mind risk.
Conclusively, everything that has been found out so far about 5G has shown us that there is actually no cause for alarm. In my own opinion, I think we should still exhibit some calmness.
